Trojans beat Harrodsburg 85-83 on last second shot
On Tuesday, February 14, the Monticello Trojans were looking to avenge
an All A 12th Region loss to Harrodsburg earlier this season. The Pioneers
had eliminated Monticello 94-91 in an exciting second round contest last
month.
There was just as much excitement in last Tuesday's contest, as
Monticello took an 85-83 win on a last second shot by senior Phillip Inman.
With the game tied at 83, Inman came up with the basketball and fired up a
shot as time expired to give Monticello the victory.
Inman had been key throughout the contest, including a tremendous first
quarter effort. He reeled off 8 straight points to pen the game and was the
only Trojan to score until Lance Garrett scored. Inman scored 13 of
Monticello's 17 first quarter points.
The Trojans led 17-12 at the first stop. Inman continued his dominance
in the second quarter, scoring 11 points. Senior Zeb Davis scored 7 points
in the quarter, including a long trey as Monticello continued to hold the
advantage.
MHS was up 43-37 at the half.
Both teams played well in the third quarter, and were able to put a lot
of points on the board. Monticello outscored Harrodsburg 23-22 in the period
and the Trojans led 66-59 at the stop.
Monticello and Harrodsburg traded baskets to start the quarter. The
Trojans committed several turnovers and allowed Harrodsburg to cut into the
lead. Also, Monticello lost point guard Tyler Bell to fouls early in the
fourth quarter.
Sophomore guard Luke Burton stepped in and played like a veteran in
Bell's position. Monticello held on to their advantage until late in the
quarter, when again several turnovers and some missed box out assignments
proved very costly. The Pioneers grabbed an offensive rebound and made the
put back to cut Monticello's lead to only 1 point.
The Trojans were unable to come up with anything offensively, and
Harrodsburg regained possession of the ball with about 30 seconds left in
the game.
Monticello's defense clamped down, and the Pioneers got off a tough shot
that wouldn't fall. But Harrodsburg went strong to the offensive boards
again and came up with the bucket. The Pioneers had a 1-point advantage,
their first of the game.
Monticello had one last shot with 10 seconds left in the game.
Harrodsburg deflected a pass out of bounds and the Trojans had about 5
seconds to score. The Trojans tried to make the inbounds pass to Inman, but
Harrodsburg defense locked down on the senior that had given them problems
all evening long.
Instead, the pass came into a wide-open Garrett, who was under the
basket. Garrett was fouled with 3 seconds left in the game and hit the front
end of the bonus to tie the game at 83. Garrett who had gone 6 for 10 from
the line, missed the second shot.
After the missed shot, there was a scramble on the floor for the ball,
and Inman dove into a crowd of Harrodsburg players. He came up with the ball
and threw up a high arcing shot as time expired to give Monticello the win.
Inman scored 40 points in the win and grabbed 12 rebounds in a
tremendous effort. Davis also finished in double figures for Monticello with
12 points.
