Harrodsburg tops Lady Trojans 51-42
Shannon Hutchinson
Sports Writer

The Monticello Lady Trojans met 12th Region foe Harrodsburg last Tuesday

night at MHS Gym, in the second game of a boys-girls doubleheader.

Monticello entered with a 1-18 mark, while the Lady Pioneers owned a 3-16

record. The contest marked the first meeting of the season between the two

schools.

Harrodsburg used the 9 fourth quarter points of Tiffany Smith and ended

the game on a 16-5 run to take a 51-42 road win. Smith, a 5-9 senior guard,

finished 12 of 19 from the free throw line and totaled a game high 14 points

in the win. The Lady Pioneers stayed at the charity-stripe in the second

half and totaled 16 of 22 points from the line.

"In the fourth quarter we gave up 12 offensive rebounds and allowed one

player to shoot 14 free throws. Our fouling and poor rebounding killed us in

the end. We certainly had our chances, we just didn't play aggressive

enough," said MHS Coach Marla Kelsch.

Tanya Mayes added 10 points, as eight different Lady Pioneers scored in

the contest. Harrodsburg made the most of a 49-29 rebound advantage, as the

squad improved to 4-16 on the season.

Monticello, which dropped to 1-19, placed two scorers in double figures

led by the 13 points of Britany Carrender. Carrender made 3 of 14 field goal

attempts and 5 of 8 free throws, plus tallied 5 steals with 5 assists in 31

minutes of action.

Raven Frost, a 5-10 freshman forward, connected on 5 of 10 shots from

the field and 2 of 3 free throws for a total of 12 points with a team high 8

rebounds. Reserve forward Tela Casada added 8 points and 5 boards, as six

different Lady Trojans etched the scoring column.

"Harrodsburg has good athletes and good team quickness. I thought they

played pretty well against our press and we didn't do a very good job of

getting back, which made things tough," said Kelsch.

Kayla West netted 4 points with 4 boards, while Cortney Morrow and

Chelsea Humble finished with 3 and 2 points each to round-out the hosts in

the scorebook.

Six different Lady Pioneers scored in the opening quarter, as the

visitors rolled to a 15-6 early lead. Monticello owned just 1 field goal in

the period, but converted on 3 of 4 free throws.

Britany Carrender led all players with 6 points in the second stanza,

but it wasn't enough as Harrodsburg used a 14-12 tilt to push a 29-18

halftime lead.

"We played a lot better in the second quarter, but we once again got off

to a slow start. We have to find a way to get off to better starts," said

Kelsch.

Raven Frost sparked Monticello's 15-4 third quarter run, with 6 points,

as the Lady Trojans rallied to knot the score at 33-33. Harrodsburg shot

just 2 of 8 from the free throw line in the frame.

"We battled back and certainly had our chances, but we just didn't make

the most of our momentum. We didn't take care of the basketball or box-out

in the fourth quarter and they made us pay at the line," said Kelsch.

Harrodsburg lost the lead in the final quarter at 37-35, but answered

back with a 12-0 run en route to taking a 51-42 win. The Lady Pioneers

connected on 12 of 21 free throws, down the stretch to seal the win. Four

different Lady Trojans scored in the fourth period, as the squad was

outscored 18-9.

A review of the stats shows Harrodsburg totaled 12 2-point baskets and 2

3-pointers. The winners made 21 of 36 free throws for 58 percent and grabbed

25 of their 49 rebounds on the offensive end.

Monticello shot 14 of 43 overall for 33 percent and tallied on 3 of 18

3-pointers for 17 percent. The squad connected on 11 of 23 free throws for

48 percent and totaled 11 assists with 8 steals against 32 turnovers. Ten

different Lady Trojans logged minutes in the contest. Up next for the squad

was a Friday night road trip to 12th Region rival Burgin.

"We're still looking for four quarters of consistent play on both ends

of the floor. We must find a way to play on both ends of the floor. We must

find a way to raise our level of intensity from the tip off," said Kelsch.
