The Wayne County Cardinals hosted Somerset High School on Tuesday,

February 14. The Jumpers emerged with a 68-46 win, marking their first win

at the Wayne County gym since 1992.

The game marked the 68th meeting between the two schools. Wayne County

leads the series 40-28. The two teams last played on February 15, 2005, when

Somerset won 58-37.

The Jumpers claimed the quick lead, powered by the first quarter effort

of Nathan Holton. Holton scored 13 of his 16 points in the opening stanza as

Somerset claimed a 21-9 advantage at the stop.

"We really dug ourselves a deep hole in the first quarter by once again

throwing the ball away too much," said Wayne County Coach Rodney Woods.

"Each time we got something going they just came right back at us and would

widen the gap."

In the second quarter, the Cardinals trailed by as many as 20, 33-13,

before Wayne County went on a 5-0 run to close the half. Somerset was up

35-18 at intermission.

The Jumpers never lost momentum, as they scored 26 points in the third

quarter to take a 61-33 lead into the final eight minutes. Somerset went to

its bench in the final frame, and scored only 7 points, while the Cards

scored 13.

"I really challenged some people at the half and Jacob Gregory really

responded with his 15 points and 15 rebounds," said Woods.

Gregory was 3 of 8 from the field and shot 9 of 12 from the free throw

line. He also had 5 steals in the game.

The Cardinals got some good minutes from W.K. Allen who came off the

bench and scored10 points in the contest. Seventh grader Austin Shearer

added 7 points.

"Austin Shearer gave us some good minutes in this game and he continues

to improve," said Woods.

The Cardinal coach was without the services of seventh grader Gavin

Dunagan, who did not play because of the flu.

"Dustin Wells had a tough night shooting the ball, making 2 of 9 shots

and 1 of 5 free throws," said Woods. "A sprained wrist and jammed fingers

really affected his shot. Hopefully, he will be less sore by Friday."

For the game, Wayne County shot 31 percent from the field, hitting 16 of

51. They were 2 of 14 from behind the arc for 14 percent. The Cards also

struggled from the free throw line, hitting 12 of 21 for 57 percent.

Somerset hit 29 of 61 from the field for 47 percent. They were 3 of 13

on 3-pointers for 23 percent. The Jumpers hit 7 of 10 from the free throw

line for 70 percent.

Wayne County out rebounded Somerset 39-33. The Cards committed 18

turnovers compared to only 9 for the Jumpers.

"I thought our guys played hard against a very young, but good Wayne

County club," said Somerset Coach Shawn Thacker. "There's a difference in

being young and being back, but Wayne County is young and very good...Coach

Woods is going to have a heck of a team down the road."

With the loss, Wayne county drops to 3-20 on the season. Somerset

improved to 17-6 on the season.
