Cardinals drop a 62-55 loss to West Jessamine

The Wayne County Cardinals played at West Jessamine on Friday, February

17. The Cards entered the game with a 3-20 record, while West Jessamine came

in with a 14-11 mark.

It marked the seventh meeting between the two schools, but the first

since West Jessamine joined the 12th Region. West Jessamine leads the series

4-3.

The Cards put together a good effort against the Colts, but couldn't

come up with the offense at the end of the game, as the local team dropped a

62-55 loss.

"This had to be one of the tougher losses of the season because of the

effort," said Wayne County Coach Rodney Woods. "Our intensity was much

better than a lot of other games this year. To be up by one at the half and

down only by two with less than three minutes to go was a pretty good job by

our team."

The Cardinals got a good start in the contest and trailed by only 2

points, 13-11, at the end of the first quarter. Wayne County scored 14

points in the second quarter and held a 1-point lead, 25-24, at

intermission.

West Jessamine regained the advantage in the third quarter, scoring 22

points to take a 46-39 lead. The Cards made a run late in the quarter to get

back within 2 points before the Colts took the win.

"Once again the turnovers we made were the difference," said Woods.

"When you have 29 turnovers and only lose by 7 points you have missed a huge

opportunity for a victory."

Wayne County shot 41 percent in the contest, hitting 19 of 46 from the

field. They were 6 of 12 from behind the arc for 50 percent. From the

charity stripe, the Cards were 11 of 16 for 68 percent.

West Jessamine shot 33 percent from the field, hitting 20 of 59. They

were 4 of 17 on 3-pointers for 23 percent. From the free throw line, the

Colts were 18 of 28 for 64 percent.

Sophomore point guard Dustin Wells scored a game-high 21 points to lead

the Cardinals. He was 7 of 9 from the field and 2 of 5 from behind the arc.

"Dustin really carried us offensively," said Woods.

Jacob Gregory finished with 8 points and Ronnie Ellis added 7 in the

contest. Gregory also had 3 steals in the contest.

Brian Johnson led West Jessamine with 19 points, and Joey Sidevanko

added 12 in the win.

The Cards had a slight rebounding edge, grabbing 37 boards compared to

36 for West Jessamine. Cody Decker had 9 rebounds to lead the Cards.

"Cody did a nice job on the boards," said Woods.

With the win, West Jessamine improved to 15-11 on the season. The Cards

dropped to 3-21.

"Our effort was good and hopefully we will build on this and cut down

the turnovers before Tuesday night at East Jessamine," stated Woods.
