The Wayne County Lady Cardinals met Fifth Region foe North Hardin last
Tuesday night at NHHS gym in a makeup game from earlier in the month.
The Lady Cards entered their regular season finale with a 19-7 record,
while North owned a 16-9 overall mark. The contest marked the opening game
of a two year contract between the two schools.
North Hardin's talented duo of Brittanie Ware and Hope Brown accounted
for 45 points, as the Lady Trojans opened with an 18-7 lead and never
trailed en route to taking a 51-35 win.
Ware finished 10 of 14 from the field and 3 of 4 from the free throw
line to tally a game high 24 points.
Brown, a 5-8 junior guard and Western Kentucky University committee,
made 8 of 13 field goal attempts and 7 of 10 free throws to net 21 points,
as five different North players scored in the win.
"North Hardin is certainly the most athletic team we've played this
season and overall I think this is the best team we've faced. They have
excellent defensive pressure, plus their quickness to the ball really makes
things a struggle on offense," said Wayne County Coach Tim Pyles.
The coach left very impressed with the tandem of Brown and Ware.
"Brown has already committed to Western, which Speaks volumes about her
abilities. I really think the Ware kid is a sleeper and can certainly play
at the next level, I know we struggled to defend her," said Pyles.
Wayne County, which dropped to 19-8, was led by the 9 points and 4
rebounds of senior forward Latoyia Green. Green tallied on 3 of 5 field goal
attempts, all from 3-point range, in 29 minutes of action. Fellow senior
Kara Gothrup added 7 points with 5 assists and 4 rebounds, as the Lady Cards
claimed a 26-22 rebound advantage.
"Against a team like North Hardin your offense really has to be on cue.
Any mistake and they just make everything a struggle, which it was all
night. We ran a lot of sets and played with good effort, we just didn't have
anything, credit their defense," said Pyles.
Meg Latham tallied 7 points, while the duo of Heather Stearns and Kayla
Jones finished with 4 points each. Stearns added 7 rebounds with 3 steals,
while Jones totaled 5 boards, as seven different Lady Cards scored in the
contest.
North Hardin opened 6 of 9 from the field and 6 of 7 from the free throw
line to race to an 18-7 first period lead. Brittanie Ware led all players
with 10 points in the quarter, while Wayne County opened 3 of 8 from the
field.
Four different Lady Cards scored in the second stanza, led by the 6
points of Latoyia Green, as the visitors answered with a 14-7 run, to close
the score to 25-21 at halftime.
"We did some very good things in the second quarter, after a pretty
tough start," said Pyles.
Cold shooting plagued the Lady Cards throughout the third frame, as the
squad made just 1 of 6 field goal attempts and scored 3 points. North used a
10-3 tilt to push to a 35-24 advantage.
Four different Lady Trojans scored in the final quarter, as North ended
the game with a 16-11 edge and pushed to a 51-35 win. Kara Gothrup paced
Wayne County with all 7 of her points in the final eight minutes, but it
wasn't enough as the squad's three game winning streak was snapped.
Courtney Duncan contributed 3 points and Emilee Burton chipped in with 1
to round out the Lady Cards in the scoring column.
North Hardin finished 19 of 40 overall for 48 percent and connected on 2
of 11 3 -pointers for 18 percent. The squad made 11 of 19 free throws for
58 percent and totaled 8 steals with 5 assists against 13 turnovers.
Wayne County shot 10 of 30 overall for 33 percent and converted on 4 of
15 3-pointers for 27 percent. The Lady Cards made 11 of 14 free throws for
79 percent and totaled 9 assists with 6 steals against 22 turnovers.
Up next for the Lady Cards is a Tuesday night 48th District match up
with McCreary Central. The teams split the two regular season games, with
Central winning the last match up.
"Exciting time of the year and this game will be all about desire and
intensity. It just comes down to who wants it more and we have to be ready
to answer the call, or accept the consequences," said Pyles.
