Turner Intermediate CmPS team wins state grand championship

For years, Wayne County's Future Problem Solving Teams have proven that

they can compete with the best teams at both the state and national levels.

This year, a team that is in its first year of existence has reached an

unprecedented milestone Turner Intermediate School's Community Problem (CmPS) Team competed at

the KAAC Governor's Cup State Finals March 11-13. The event was held at the

Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville.

Turner's CmPS Team submitted a six-page paper and a six-page addendum on

Project B.R.E.A.T.H.E. (Building Relationships Educating About Tobacco's

Harmful Effects). The students also displayed and presented their project at

a CmPS fair on Monday, March 13.

The team from Turner Intermediate was declared the overall state grand

champion in the Junior Division, earning them a spot in the international

competition that will be held June 1-4 at Colorado State University in Ft.

Collins, Colorado.

Local residents have probably become familiar with Project

B.R.E.A.T.H.E. recently. Turner students have presented smoke-free proposals

to the Monticello City Council, Wayne County Fiscal Court, and the Wayne

County Board of Education. All three of the groups have adopted smoke-free

policies for buildings and properties under their respective jurisdictions.

Members of Turners Community Problems Solving Team are: Zachary

Alexander, Aubree Anderson, Logan Anderson, Emily Decker, Allison Hicks,

Austin Kirksey, Austin Little, Kezia Ramsey, Teddy Rinehart, Samantha

Sexton, Tiffany Thompson, and Molly Vinsant.

In addition to the great performance by the CmPS, Turner Intermediate

School also had two Future Problem Solving Teams advance to the state

finals.

The first team finished third overall in the competition. Team members

were: Aubree Anderson, Logan Anderson, Allison Hicks, and Austin Kirksey.

The second team finished fourth overall and team members were: Austin

Little, Teddy Rinehart, Tiffany Thompson, and Molly Vinsant.

A.J. Lloyd Middle School's Future Problem Solving Team finished sixth in

the middle grades division in the state finals. The squad was among 32 teams

competing in that division. This marks the highest finish for any middle

school FPS Team from Wayne County. Team members include: Lauren Cameron,

Tyler East, Dakota Preat, and Dillon West.

The Future Problem Solving Team and the CmPS Team from Turner and A.J.

Lloyd are coached by Scott Sexton, who is the Gifted and Talented Resource

Specialist at Turner Intermediate School. Turner Family Resource Center

Director Virginia Southard also serves as a coach and administrator for the

CmPS Team. Mitchell Gregory and Jill Massengale serve as academic team

coaches at A.J. Lloyd Middle School.
