New channel may be added to cable

Local cable customers may soon have a channel added to their basic
service, after the Telecommunications Board voted last week to include WLJC
in their package. The action is contingent upon the quality of signal that
is received from the Beatyville television station.
Dale Hancock, manager of Community Telecom Services, told board members
that there had been requests to add the gospel television station to the
local cable system. He noted that the Beatyville station will pay for any
equipment necessary to add the channel to the local cable system and they
will also help with installation.
Hancock indicated that it would take at least a couple of weeks to get
the equipment, and then the channel would have to be tested for signal
quality before it would be available for local customers. There would be no
additional cost to the cable system for the channel, according to Hancock.
Hancock also told board members that there had been numerous requests
for the cable system to add the FX channel. FX carries several racing
events, which creates a lot of interest among local customers.
Board members briefly discussed the option, which would cost the cable
company an additional $800 per month. Board chairman Wade Upchurch said it
is an option that board members can think about before making any decision.
The board heard an update regarding the RUS loan application for the
fiber to the home project. City Clerk-Treasurer Greg Latham said that he had
talked with RUS officials about two weeks ago, and he is currently waiting
to hear if the revised figures that were submitted for the project have to
be included on official loan documents.
Latham indicated that there could be about a month's delay before the
application is turned over to the committee for consideration.
The board heard a report from the personnel committee, which recommended
that the issue of employee raises be tabled until they receive more
information about financing for the fiber project.
