The Shades of the Past Festival has become an increasingly popular
event
every year, and this year is no exception. A record number of booths,
as
well as classic automobiles, are expected to fill the downtown area on
Saturday afternoon for the celebration.
This marks the sixth year for the Shades of the Past 50's and 60's
Celebration, which is sponsored by the Monticello-Wayne County Chamber
of
Commerce. Penny Thompson, Administrative Assistant for the Chamber,
noted
that so far there has been a lot of interest in this year's event.
The celebration will be held from 3 until 9 p.m. and there is
something
for everyone to enjoy. The evening will feature live entertainment and
a
variety of activities. Monticello Elementary Children's Choir will open
the
program. Others who will take the stage include: Bell Tones, Wayne
County
High School Choir, Elvis impersonator Rick Staley, Western Rail and
Klassyc
Tymes.
There are plans to bring back many favorite contests, including
Best
Dressed, bubble gum blowing, hula hoop and limbo. Classic cars, along
with
motorcycles, will be on display around the square.
Everyone is encouraged to bring a lawn chair and dress in 50's and
60's
attire.
Thompson noted that streets will be blocked to thru traffic between
the
hours of 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday. Detour routes will be marked.
She also pointed out that the Quilt Shoppe and the Wayne County
