Celebrating cancer survivors at Relay for Life event
For cancer survivors, every day is a celebration of life. On Saturday,
June 3 Monticello will join them in that celebration for the annual American
Cancer Society Relay for Life of Wayne County.
A survivors celebration will kick-off the event beginning at 7 p.m. All
cancer survivors will receive a survivor medal and t-shirt and will be
acknowledged for their strength and courageous battle in the fight against
cancer.
Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society's national signature
activity, is a team event that brings the community together to raise
awareness and funds for cancer research, remember those who lost their fight
to the disease and celebrate the victories of all survivors.
Cancer survivors are invited to share their courage with the community
and kick off the overnight event by leading the first lap of the Relay for
Life.
"If you need proof that we are making great strides in the fight against
cancer, all you need to do is look at the many survivors walking on the
track. It is an amazing and inspirational sight," said Lorene Brummett,
Relay for Life chair.
To register for the survivors celebration, call the American Cancer
Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.
One of the cornerstones of the Relay for Life is the luminaria ceremony,
where candles shine in honor of those who battle cancer and in memory of
those who have been lost. As Relay for Life participants walk throughout the
night, the luminaria light their journey.
If someone in your life has been touched by cancer, order a luminaria in
their honor or memory. Your minimum $5 donation will help fund the American
Cancer Society's fight against this disease, including research to help find
a cure.
To order a luminaria for the local Relay for Life, please mail your
name, address, day and evening phone numbers, and the name of the individual
that you want a candle lit in honor of or in memory of along with your check
to: Relay for Life Luminaria Ceremony, Rt. 6 Box 8070, Monticello, KY 42633.
Please make your check payable to American Cancer Society. An order form
will be included in next week's edition of The Outlook.
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based,
voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major
health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering
from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.
