Fiscal Court gives larger donation to Rescue Squad
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

The Wayne County Rescue Squad will receive a larger donation in the

county budget this year, following action taken by fiscal court during a

meeting on Thursday, June 8.

Rescue Squad Captain David Frost addressed the court during the meeting

and formally made a request that the county amend the 2006-2007 budget to

increase the squad's donation from $17,500 to $25,000. Frost pointed out the

squad has to deal with increased gasoline prices, as well as increased

insurance costs.

District One Magistrate Jerry Sloan asked if the county has the money in

the budget to increase the donation. County Judge-Executive Bruce Ramsey

said there would be money available.

Sloan made a motion to amend the budget and increase the donation for

the next fiscal year. It was approved unanimously.

The budget itself was scheduled for a second reading during the meeting,

but action was postponed. Ramsey said that the court would meet in special

session on Thursday, June 22 at 8 a.m. for the second reading of the budget

amendment ordinance.

During that special meeting, the court will also interview applicants

for the additional litter abatement officer's position this summer. The

court agreed to advertise to take applications for the position.

Also during the meeting, the court opened bids for various goods and

services for the next fiscal year. Bids were awarded for contracted

services, road oil, stone, blacktop, concrete, gasoline and diesel.

No bids were received for propane gas.

The court heard several departmental reports. Solid Waste Coordinator

Andrew Parmley pointed out that the litter abatement officer has picked up

white goods and large items at 116 households in the past month, bringing

the total to 976.

Parmley noted that the county has received reimbursement from PRIDE for

the most recent dumpsite cleanups. An application has also been made for

another $50,000 PRIDE grant this fall.

A report from Jailer Ray Upchurch showed current population at the

Detention Center is now 152, including 90 state inmates and 62 county

inmates.

The Detention Center received a total of $98,582.82 for housing inmates

in the month of April. They have billed $94,749.17 for the month of May.

Wayne County EMS Director Bubby Corder reported that the ambulance

service has responded to 1,379 calls since January 1. Corder noted that EMS

participated in the Child Plus Fair, and they also set up the Mobile Command

Unit at the 50's and 60's festival downtown.

In other action, the court:

* Approved the adoption of the Gibson Cemetery Road into the county road

system.

* Approved the adoption of Corder Cove Subdivision into the county road

system.

* Approved the transfer of $34,650 from Homeland Security to the general

fund.

* Agreed to donate $150 to the Monticello Fire Department's School Fire

Prevention Program.

* Agreed to advertise to include an extension of the Lincoln Hollow Road

into the county road system.
