Lady Cards to face Christian Fellowship in Sweet 16

The Wayne County Lady Cardinals, 33-8 on the season and champions of the

12th Region, open play in the Sweet 16 this Friday afternoon against

Christian Fellowship. The tournament, hosted at the Frankfort Convention

Complex, marks Wayne County's first ever Sweet 16 appearance.

"We're very excited to win the region and earn the right to play in the

Sweet 16. Give all the credit to our girls for their hard work and

dedication. We're going there with the goal of winning some games and

putting our best foot forward, but make no mistake whatever happens we're

not going to hang our heads," said Lady Cards head coach Steve Thompson.

Wayne County faces Christian Fellowship, the champs of Region One, in

the first game of the tournament in the opening round. Fellowship enters as

one of the hottest teams in the state with a 26-6 overall record, which

includes wins in 17 of their last 18 games.

"At this point we don't know a whole lot about Christian Fellowship.

They play over in the far western part of the state and we haven't played in

any of the same tournaments. I do know they have an excellent record and

rolled through their regional tournament," said Thompson.

Christian Fellowship opened region play with a 25-8, 25-13 victory over

10-11 Fulton City. The squad followed that up with an impressive 25-14, 25-6

pounding of 23-4 Paducah Community Christian in the semifinals.

Fellowship claimed the 1st Region title with a 25-11, 25-17 win over

24-13 Lone Oak.

The teams do share some common opponents with very similar results.

Both teams own wins over Henderson County and each squad lost to

Greenwood, in tournament play.

"We beat Henderson County 2-0 and 2-1 and they beat Henderson County 3-1

and 3-0, so I guess if you go on scores we're pretty similar. We also both

lost to Greenwood in three set matches, so even though you can't really

compare scores if you do it's a toss-up," said Thompson.

Wayne County has played Corbin, Greenwood and Lafayette that are all in

the Sweet 16 and owns a 1-2 record against those schools.

"We've tried to play a very good schedule with some of the best teams

around the state. I do think playing in the Pulaski Invitational, Greenwood

Invitational and the big tournament in Tennessee really helped us in the

regional tournament. Hopefully we'll rely on those experiences and go out

and play the same focused, aggressive volleyball that helped us win the

region," said Thompson.

Christian Fellowship has also played Greenwood and Apollo that are in

the Sweet 16 and owns a 0-3 record.

"They played some good teams as well, so I guess the team that comes out

with an aggressive style and limits their errors will win. We can't afford

to be timid, we have to come out and play our style of volleyball," said

Thompson.

Game time is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Frankfort's Convention Complex.

"Hopefully everyone that can will make the trip to Frankfort. I know it

means so much to the girls and I really think this team isn't done with just

making the Sweet 16. We wanted to win the district and region and

accomplished that, now we have to go back to survival mode and find a way to

make it to Saturday. I really feel this group wants to do well and make

their mark," said Thompson.
