Three charged in murder case are arraigned
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

All three of the defendants charged in connection with the William Wells, Sr. murder case appeared in Wayne Circuit Court Monday morning for arraignment.

Richard Taylor, Jr., George Maupin, and Kathi Shelton made separate appearances before Circuit Judge Vernon Miniard, Jr.

Shelton was the first called before the court. She is charged with complicity to murder, robbery, and first degree assault in connection with the death of Wells, who was found dead in his rural home on May 16. William Wells, Jr. suffered multiple injuries in a beating incident that also occurred at the residence.

Shelton was represented by attorney Mark Stanziano of Somerset. Stanziano waived formal arraignment of his client and entered a plea of not guilty. He then referred to a motion filed for pretrial release of his client. Miniard set bond for Shelton at $500,000 cash.

Taylor, who is represented by George Storberger, was the next in the case to appear before Miniard Monday morning. His attorney also waived formal arraignment and entered a plea of not guilty. Sorberger noted that he had filed a motion for pretrial release for his client that morning.

Miniard indicated the motion would be heard during a pretrial hearing August 3, which was set for all three defendants.

George Maupin, represented by Jim Cox, also waived formal arraignment and entered a plea of not guilty. Cox noted that motions have been filed in Maupin’s case including a motion for pretrial release. Miniard indicated he would hear that motion on August 3.

All three remain lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center.
