Application for RUS funds for cable system upgrade should be completed soon
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

The application for RUS funds to upgrade the cable system to fiber to the home should be completed by July 14. Members of the Telecommuni-cations Board discussed the progress of the project during a meeting held Wednesday, June 16.

That is an amended date, since earlier plans called for the application to be completed by July 1. Central Associated Engineers of Lexington received the bid to actually make the application for the RUS funding.

Board members seemed positive about the prospects of RUS funding. Telecommuni-cations Board chairman Wade Upchurch told board members last week that this company has never filed for a RUS loan and been turned down.

A RUS loan could take three to six months to receive approval after it is submitted. The total cost for the project is still not specifically nailed down, since estimates have ranged from a high of $22 million to a lower figure of $12 million.
