The search for a missing five-year-old boy ended tragically Monday evening, when his body was found in Lake Cumberland.
The body of Jonathan Hicks, 5, of Monticello, was discovered over a 200 foot embankment in the lake about 500 yards from his residence where he had last been seen Sunday evening.
The search for the boy began shortly after 9:10 p.m. Sunday, when his parents, Bobby and Jewell Hicks, reported him missing to Kentucky State Police. State police notified the local dispatch center, and the Wayne County Rescue Squad was alerted to join the search.
Members of the Wayne County Rescue Squad responded to the Hicks’ residence near the Wayne-Pulaski line and learned that the child had apparently wandered away from home after playing with the family pet.
Helicopters with search lights and thermal imaging cameras flew over the scene, and K-9 units were brought in for the search.
In addition, a number of volunteers helped comb the fields near the rural home of the Hicks’ family.
Trooper Craig Sutton, with Kentucky State Police Post 11 in London, said helicopters were utilized in the search on Sunday night and again on Monday.
Dogs were also brought in to try to detect the direction the boy might have traveled. A pond in a nearby neighborhood, Colson Cove, was searched and divers were back in the water Monday afternoon for a second search effort.
