Members of the local National Guard unit are among several units across the state that have been put on alert for possible duty in Iraq.

According to information released last week, members of the 1st Battalion 623rd Field Artillery, which includes batteries in Glasgow, Tomkinsville, Campbellsville, and Monticello, were included in the latest alert.

The 298th Chemical Company in Louisville and the 299th Chemical Company in Jackson were also alerted.

The Kentucky Army National Guard said in a statement that 576 troops were put on alert, but did not say where their specific assignments might be.
