County fair to begin Friday

Fair days begin Friday at Memorial Park, and many favorite events are back to highlight the annual Wayne County Fair and Horse Show.
“We’re just hoping for a good, safe, and injury-free fair once again,” said fair board president David Worley. “We want everyone to have a good time.”
The fair usually begins the last Friday in June and runs through the Fourth of July holiday. But the dates for this year’s fair have changed, since the holiday is on Sunday this year. Worley noted that the fair board had to change the schedule a little this year. Probably the biggest change is the date for the fireworks display, which will be held this year on Friday, July 9.
“We can’t have the fireworks on a night when we have horses there,” explained Worley.
The opening weekend of the fair will include the horse shows. Friday night, July 2 is the championship horse show. Other opening night events include the beautiful baby contest and the money in the hay contest.
Saturday’s events include the market lamp show, the horseshoe pitching contest, the mini Olympics and the western horse show. Worley noted that the mini Olympics will begin at 7 p.m., instead of earlier in the day.
Sunday, July 4 will be highlighted by the motorcycle show, which is in its second year at the local fair.
