Police continue to look for the man who held up the BB&T Bank in Monticello on Wednesday, June 30, and there is a strong possibility that the local bank robbery is linked to one that occurred in neighboring Pulaski County on Friday, June 25.

Monticello Police Detective Sheridan Wright said there are similarities between the robbery at BB&T and the one that occurred at Cumberland Security Bank on U.S. 27 in Somerset. The descriptions are similar and the suspect in the two robberies left what he claimed to be a bomb at both banks.

The robbery at BB&T occurred at approximately 12:57 p.m. Officials said a man armed with a handgun entered the bank and demanded money. He also had the bank’s vault opened and then left the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“He had done some research, not necessarily on this bank, but about general banking practices,” stated Wright.

Wright said the man left a device that he claimed to be a bomb in the bank. The Kentucky State Police Bomb Squad was called to the scene and determined that it was not an explosive device.
