Annual Gene Lowe 12th Region Junior All Star Game held at Pulaski County

The 12th Region Boys Basketball Coaches Association held the Second Annual Gene Lowe Junior All-Star game last Tuesday evening at Pulaski County High School.

The game was named in memory of Lowe after his passing last spring. He was a friend to 12th Region basketball for over 40 years as a referee, an avid fan, and a local sporting goods businessman. He officiated several 12th Region championship games over the years.

Before the game, former 12th Region Coaches Association President Roscoe Denney presented a power point presentation in a “Tribute to Gene Lowe.” The Lowe family was then presented with a Hall of Fame plaque in recognition of Gene’s induction into the Inaugural Class of the 12th Region Hall of Fame.

The Gene Lowe Memorial Fund, which was established by the Lowe family last spring, has already awarded all the funds that it received during the first year of its existence. Each year at the boys and girls state tournaments a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to the boy and girl who exemplifies the ability to make everyone around them a better person.

This program is handled for the Lowe family by the KHSAA. The first awards were given at this year’s boys and girls state tournaments. Other monetary awards have been given to youth sports organizations.

The 12th Region Coaches Association continued to celebrate its 15th year of existence by hosting an “Old Timers Game” this year. The game was played prior to the “Gene Lowe” game. Twenty-nine former 12th Region greats were slated to play in this game. Local players who participated included Cliff Hunter, David Phillips, Leon Allen and Trevis Upchurch.

The teams were randomly split into blue and gray teams. The blue team, coached by former Harrodsburg coach Barry Welty, won the game over the gray team, which was coached by Somerset assistant coach Chris Atkins, who was filling in for Raymond Reed of Laurel County who could not attend.

The final score was 104-93 in favor of the blue team. After the game, the players were treated to pizza and soft drinks. They also received a game t-shirt. This was sponsored by the 12th Region Coaches Association.

In the “Gene Lowe” game, the Junior All-Stars from the 47th-48th districts defeated the Junior All-Stars from the 45th-46th districts by a score of 108-94.

Steven Sexton of Wayne County led all scorers with 21 points, followed by D.J. Perkins of South Laurel and Michael Robinson of North Laurel with 13 points each. Nathan Bray of Somerset chipped in with 11 points. Wayne County’s Drew Guffey also participated in the Junior All Star game.

Adam Gray of Harrodsburg led the 45th-46th districts with 15 points, followed by McRay of Mercer County and Barlow of Casey County with 12 points each, while Webb of Harrodsburg tossed in 10 points.

At the conclusion of the game an awards ceremony was held Officials Mike Black, Jimmy Dyehouse, Keith Morgan and Jeff Singleton were presented plaques for their time and effort in officiating both games.

The following coaches also received plaques: Rodney Woods, Wayne County, 47th-48th District Coach; Avery Hatfield, Pulaski County, 47th-48th District Honorary Coach; Spencer Tatum, Harrodsburg, 45th-46th District Coach; Bob Tucker, Somerset, 45th-46th District Honorary Coach; Barry Welty, Harrodsburg, “Old Timers” Coach; Raymond Reed, Laurel County, “Old Timers” Coach; Dave Fraley, Pulaski County, 600 wins; Rodney Woods, Wayne County, 600 wins; and Steve Wright, South Laurel, 400 wins.

Shawn Thacker of Somerset received a plaque for five years of dedication service as treasurer of the 12th Region Boys Basketball Coaches Association. Don Irvine of Burgin received a plaque for serving four years as vice-president of the association.

Prior to the game, the three-point contest was won by Nathan Bray of Somerset, who hit 12 3-pointers in one minute. Ryan Jamison of Somerest won the dunk contest.

In a business meeting, the Coaches Association decided to move the “Gene Lowe” game to South Laurel High School beginning next year and to also move the game back to Saturday night so that players living out of the area could attend the “Old Timers” game.

Rodney Woods of Wayne County was installed as the new president of the 12th Region Coaches Association. This is Woods’ second stint as the president of the association. He replaces Roscoe Denney, who resigned this spring.
