A fourth person has been indicted in connection with the robbery that occurred at the William Wells, Sr. residence in May.

The Wayne County Grand Jury returned a sealed indictment against Scotty Upchurch on June 28, charging Upchurch with complicity to robbery in the first degree.

Upchurch was arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department on June 28. Bond was set at $100,000 cash.

The indictment alleges that Upchurch aided or attempted to aid “George M. Maupin and/or Richard Taylor, Jr. in planning or committing the offense of robbery in the first degree.”

Maupin and Taylor remain in the Wayne County Detention Center charged with the murder of Wells, Sr. and the assault of his son William Wells, Jr. A third suspect, Kathi Shelton, also remains in jail charged with complicity to murder and complicity to robbery first degree and assault first degree.

Wells, Sr. died from blunt force trauma at his home in the Cooper community. Wells, Jr., suffered multiple injuries and was taken to a Lexington hospital after a relative found the grisly scene just before noon on Sunday, May 16.

Taylor, Maupin and Shelton were indicted by the grand jury in May.
