Peggy Guffey, a member of the Wayne County Board of Education, has resigned from her position as of Friday, July 16. Guffey submitted her resignation to Wayne County Central Office on Friday.
She also submitted a letter to The Wayne County Outlook on Friday, announcing her resignation and thanking the people in District Two who have supported her during her tenure on the board.
“I am resigning my position on the Wayne County Board effective immediately,” stated Guffey’s letter to the newspaper. “I am doing this at this time so the people in District Two will have time to file for this position for this fall’s election. I would like to thank the people of District Two for their support over the last five and one half years.”
During an interview earlier this week, Guffey said that she resigned because of a change of residence and that she no longer lives in the district.
County Court Clerk Carol Jones said Monday that her office had not been notified yet of the vacancy. It may take several days before that happens, since Guffey’s resignation must first go to the State Board of Education.
Normally, the State Board of Education would appoint someone to fill the vacancy until the next election.
School board elections for both the county and the city appear on the November general election ballot. Guffey’s seat is not among the three county school board seats that are up for election this fall, but will likely appear on the ballot after her resignation.
Filing deadline for candidates in these races is August 10 at 4 p.m., according to Jones. But she stated that until she is notified of the vacancy by the State Board of Education no candidacy papers can be filed in Guffey’s district.
