Arraignments for persons charged in murder case
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

Four of the five individuals charged in connection with the death of an elderly Wayne County man were scheduled to appear in Wayne Circuit Court on Tuesday, August 3.

An arraignment before Circuit Judge Vernon Miniard, Jr. was scheduled for Elizabeth Miller at 11 a.m., as this edition was going to press.

Miller and Scotty Upchurch were the most recent arrests in connection with the investigation into a May incident that resulted in the death of Williams Wells, Sr. and the assault of his son, William Wells, Jr.

Miller and Upchurch were indicted in June on charges of complicity to robbery first degree.

Upchurch was arraigned on July 21 in Wayne Circuit Court. A pre-trial conference has been set for September 7 at 1 p.m. for Upchurch.

Richard Taylor, Jr., George M. Maupin, and Kathi Shelton were arrested May 17. Wells’ body was discovered in his home by a relative on May 16.

Taylor and Maupin have both been charged with murder, first degree robbery and first degree assault. Shelton has been charged with complicity to murder, assault and robbery.

Taylor, Maupin and Shelton were all scheduled to appear before Miniard Tuesday at 1 p.m. for pre-trial conferences.

I also have a personal interest in the case and hope that justice is served but I also wonder what would cause someone to do something SO horrific-if it is because of illegal drugs then more needs to be done to prevent this from EVER happening again.Monticello is my hometown but not the town I grew up in.We need more education in schools, more family awareness and much harsher sentencing the first time someone is arrested. There is a bigger picture to this-a wake up call if you will...this is something WE should not have let happen. Please report any illegal drug activity.

I also am very interested in this case.Mr. Wells was indeed a wonderful person and did not deserve to leave this world this way.I cannot believe what people do these days and I for one hope justice prevails.
