Volunteers search for man who has been missing 9 1/2 years

The scene was like one from a “Cold Case Files” show on television, as cadaver dogs and volunteers searched through remote fields in the Eadsville community Saturday afternoon and again Sunday in hope of finding a man missing for more than 9 1/2 years.

The group did not locate the remains of Charles Harris, Sr., who has been missing since January 22, 1995. His car was found abandoned on Toothache Ridge Road three days later, and relatives of Harris believe he was killed and his body is located somewhere nearby.

The case, nearly a decade old, received new life last week, when Charles Harris, Jr., who lives in Indianapolis, Indiana, got the P.A.W.S. K-9 Search and Rescue Unit involved. The volunteers made the six hour trip Saturday, bringing several search and cadaver dogs to Wayne County. A television crew from Lexington had aired a story about the search and followed up by filming footage at the remote site on Saturday.

“All we can do is try to help,” said Dawn Teague, one of the Directors of P.A.W.S.

The group brought three cadaver dogs and broke up into teams to walk through the tall grass and over the hilly terrain. They began the search from the area where Harris, Sr.’s car was found and were specifically looking for some type of opening where a body could be placed, like a ravine or a well.

Teague and Leah Snyder, who is also a director with the group, said they set up a specific search area from information they have received from the family members. Harris, Jr., who was 12 at the time his father disappeared, was also involved in the weekend search.
