Son is charged with murder of his parents

An Albany man, arrested in Monticello two days before his parents’ bodies were discovered, has been charged with murder in connection with their deaths.

State police charged Jonathan Jerome Burchett, 30, with murder on Wednesday, while he remained in custody at the Wayne County Detention Center.

The investigation that led officials to the Clinton County residence, near the Wayne County line, where the bodies of Ronnie Burchett, 56, and his wife, Charlonia Burchett, 54, were found Monday, began in Monticello Saturday evening, when local officers stopped a suspicious vehicle on Evelyn Avenue.

Burchett and Jarrod Hancock, 27, were taken into custody, after officers say they found evidence that connected the two men to a recent break-in at the Top Stop Store near Conley Bottom.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department had been investigating the August 21 break-in, where cigarettes, lighters, a significant amount of cash and other items had been taken.

At the time of the traffic stop, Hancock was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance first degree, possession of a controlled substance third degree, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of an open alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.

Burchett was held on an outstanding warrant charging him with a forged check.

Monticello Police later charged both men with third degree burglary and receiving stolen property over $300 in connection with the break-in at the market.

During the investigation, Monticello Police Chief Melvin Rose said he became suspicious that something may have happened to the Burchett couple, who he was acquainted with.

He said he visited the garage that Burchett ran on Monday, then visited the home that afternoon.
