After nearly 21 years on the bench, District Judge Jeff Choate has decided to retire. Choate announced his retirement in a statement issued last week.
“Over the past several months I have been faced with a decision that we all come to eventually, that is of retirement,” said Choate. “Having discussed the decision with my family I have decided to retire as your District Judge.”
Choate has accepted the position of Senior Judge for the state of Kentucky. A Senior Judge serves whenever they are are needed across the state.
Choate plans to remain as District Judge until a replacement has been appointed to complete his term, which is through 2006. The process to replace him is similar to that utilized to fill the vacant Circuit Judge’s position. A committee comprised of representatives from each of the three counties in this judicial district—Wayne, Clinton and Russell Counties—will submit a recommendation to the Governor. The Governor will actually make the appointment.
Choate indicated that this appointment would be made by the end of September or sometime in October.
“I will remain as your District Judge until my replacement has been appointed and will make the transition of the new District Judge as smooth as possible,” stated Choate. “I plan on serving as Senior Judge for a few years and then look forward to once again being part of the local legal community.”
Choate expressed his appreciation to the citizens of Wayne County who have allowed him to serve as District Judge.
“I would, first and foremost, like to thank you for your support,” stated Choate. “I would also like to thank the many wonderful people I’ve worked with over the years. I have served longer than any judge in the district and it has been an honor and I have enjoyed the work.”
