6-23-10 — For three days last week, local residents had the opportunity to
participate in the tire amnesty program.
Tens of thousands of tires were hauled to the state highway garage
and disposed of free of charge.
"We are glad we can provide this service to our citizens," noted
Wayne County Judge-Executive Greg Rankin, as the program entered its second day of collection on Friday. At that point, more than 20,000
tires had been brought to the state garage for disposal. "It's
another service we can provide at no cost to our local taxpayers." It's a program that many people have been waiting on for a while.
It has been several years since Wayne County has had a tire amnesty
program and that was evident by the loads of tires that were
collected last week.
Rankin expressed his appreciation to Wayne County Solid Waste
Coordinator Tim Bell, as well as the state solid waste management
program, for all their work.
"This is a program that fits well with all our recycling initiatives
in the county," noted Rankin.
"This is a great program and it helps us keep our county clean and
get tires to the proper place and out of illegal dumps," noted Bell.
The tire amnesty program was held on June 10, 11 and 12.
