8-25-10 — Recently, soldiers from Monticello's Battery C, 1st Battalion 623d Field Artillery made history when they became the first soldiers from the Kentucky Army National Guard to fire the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).
The M142 is the US Army's premier rocket and missile artillery system.
The live fire took place at Fort Knox's Steeles Range and was attended by several local residents, including Monticello Mayor Kenneth Catron, Monticello Police Chief Ralph Miniard, and Superintendent of Wayne County Schools John Dalton, as well as many of the soldiers' family members.
In June, C Battery's Specialist Brandon Miller also made Kentucky Army National Guard history when he became the first KYARNG soldier to ever be awarded the Kentucky Physical Fitness Ribbon.
SPC Miller received the award for scoring 341 points on the Army Physical Fitness Test, which was the highest score in the entire 138th Fires Brigade.
Charlie Battery recently launched its own facebook page in order to keep friends and family members updated on unit history and events, military benefits, and family readiness group activities.
The page is focused on past, present and future soldiers, family members and the local community.
Anyone interested in finding out more about the unit can search facebook for "Charlie Battery" and send the unit a friend request to be added.
