Monticello — A Wayne County woman died on Wednesday, January 28 from injuries she
sustained in a single-vehicle crash that occurred on Highway 1546 in the
Stop community.
Jennifer Powell, 37, was pulled from her vehicle after it overturned in
a swollen stream, as Wayne County EMS, the Monticello Fire Department, the
Wayne County Sheriff's Depart-ment, and several bystanders were involved in
the rescue effort. She was taken to the Wayne County Hospital and then
airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where she died later
that day.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff's Depart-ment, the accident was
reported at 11:02 a.m. Powell was traveling east on KY 1546 in a 2006 Chevy
Cobalt.
Due to roads being snow and ice covered, Powell lost control of her
vehicle going over a hill and around a curve.
According to the report, she left the roadway and her vehicle overturned
in the water.
Wayne County Sheriff Charles Boston commended the efforts of seven
people who jumped into the water, along with local officials, to try to
rescue Powell. Wayne County EMS Director Bubby Corder also praised the
teamwork that occurred at the scene of the crash.
"It was a good team effort between the rescuers on the scene, members of
the fire department and the citizens who were there," said Corder.
Powell is survived by her husband, J.B. Powell, and two children,
Whitney and Brandon Powell. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January
31. Complete obituary information is included in this edition of The
