Wayne County schools amend '09-¹10 calendar

By MELODIE PHELPS News Editor
Wayne County Outlook

Monticello — Wayne County students will be in class three days of what was scheduled

to be their spring break, according to an amended calendar that was approved

by the school board during a meeting held on Thursday, February 11.

The board reviewed two versions of the amended calendar. One version

left spring break intact, but added make-up days that would extend the

school year into June.

The one that was approved by the board would take three days of spring

break, use make-up days that were built into the calendar and extend the

school year to May 27.

This means that county students will be in class April 5-7. Classes will

be dismissed April 8-9 for spring break.

So far, the Wayne County School District has missed 14 days this winter

due to weather. Any other days that are missed beyond that will mean that

additional days will be added to the end of the school year.

In his report to the board, Superintendent John Dalton noted that the

Wayne County School District has received a 21st Century Learning Centers

grant for Turner Intermediate and the Middle School. The grant is for a

three-year period and has the chance to be renewed beyond that.

Last week¹s board meeting was hosted by Wayne County High School, and

members learned about some of the new technology that is being used at the

school, including the new Smart Boards that were purchased with federal

stimulus funds.

During the meeting, the board recognized the numerous club activities

that are offered at the high school.

The Environmental Club, which is new to the school, talked about some of

the activities they have been involved in this year.

The club recently attended the TOUR Southern and Eastern Kentucky

Tourism Forum in Somerset and received the first ever "Our Town" Club award

for community awareness.

In other action, the boardŠ

€ Agreed to allow Carpenters for Christ the use of school facilities in

June, provided that school is not in session at that time.

€ Approved the disclosure of the free and reduce price information

agreement as required by the federal and state school lunch programs.

€ Met in executive session to discuss possible litigation. No action was

taken.
