Wayne Co. School District receives recognition

Melodie Phelps, News Editor
Wayne County Outlook

Monticello — The Wayne County School District has been recognized as an Exemplary

Growth District for the 2007-2008 biennium. The good news was shared with

the members of the Wayne County Board of Education and Superintendent John

Dalton during their regular monthly meeting on Monday, April 20.

In a letter to Dalton, Interim Kentucky Education Commissioner Elaine

Farris congratulated the district on this achievement. An Exemplary Growth

District is a district in which all schools are classified as "Progressing"

or "Meets Goals" and have met the dropout and novice reduction criteria

established for schools.

Farris also noted that a review of the data showed that the Wayne County

School District made adequate yearly progress as defined by the No Child

Left Behind Act in one or both years of biennium.

"You should be very proud of the progress your district has made,"

Farris stated in the letter. "I know it is the result of dedication and many

hours of hard work by you, the teachers, staff and all the students in the

Wayne County School District."

During the meeting, Dalton shared the certificates of congratulations

with each of the school board members. He expressed his gratitude and

appreciation to Wayne County's teachers, staff, students, and parents for

working together to achieve these significant milestones.

"I am very proud of this accomplishment," stated Dalton. "I appreciate

the hard work of everyone in our district...I appreciate all the hard work

they do every day."

In other action during the meeting, the board approved the site based

decision making allocation staffing formulas for the 2009-2010 school year.

Dalton noted that they will remain the same as the current year.

Dalton informed board members that they have received no word yet

regarding the request for five calamity days. He noted that no matter what

happens graduation has been set and will be held on Saturday, May 30.

Earlier in the meeting, several Wayne County High School students shared

samples of their work in three subject areas, including science, social

studies, and language arts.
