First phase of fiber to home project is ready to be bid

Monticello — The staking for phase one of the fiber to the home project has been completed and the project is ready to be put on the Computer Aided Design (CAD) system.

Members of the Telecommunication Board learned about the progress of the initial phase of the project during a meeting held on Wednesday, May 20.

Board chairman Greg Latham said that this phase of the project could be ready to bid within the next week or so. Instead of having to call a special meeting of the entire board to proceed with the project, a project committee has been appointed to deal with upcoming decisions.

The committee will consist of Latham, Aaron Stringer, and Phillip Duncan or Wade Upchurch, depending on schedules.

Also during the meeting, Upchurch was appointed as vice-chairman of the board. The vacant position had been discussed during the board's meeting in April, but they opted to wait until this month before making a decision.

The board had also discussed the possibility of eliminating several of the premium movie channels that are carried now by Community Telecom Services. By eliminating some or all of the premium movie channels, which have experienced a decrease in subscribers over the past few years, the cable system could opt to add several other basic channels to the system, like ESPNU and RFD-TV.

The board also discussed the possibility of adding STAR radio and WFLW to the cable system in the future. No action was taken on either of these matters.
