Melodie Phelps, News Editor
Wayne County Outlook

Monticello — There has been one reported case of H1N1, more commonly known as the

swine flu, among the student population in the Wayne County School District,

according to information released by officials on Monday afternoon.

School officials stated that they are taking proactive measures to help

reduce the spread of flu in the district. They are following recommended

guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the

Kentucky Department of Education to make decisions about the best steps to

take concerning school health policies.

Like districts across the state, Wayne County is working with the local

health department and physicians to monitor flu conditions daily. Hundreds

of confirmed cases of H1N1 flu already having been reported in Kentucky, and

most of those cases have been mild and have not required hospitalization.

School officials said that staff members are taking extra measures to

educate students on preventative measures they can take to avoid all types

of flu. For instance, proper hand washing techniques and not sharing

personal items are being stressed. In addition, parents received letters

sharing prevention techniques and tips on dealing with H1N1.

Other information is available on the school district's website at

www.wayne.kyschools.us.

Proper cleaning techniques have already been implemented on school

buses, classrooms and buildings to further protect against the spread of all

communicable diseases.
