Elderly man dies from vehicle accident

Monticello — An elderly Wayne County man died as the result of injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident on Thursday, September 25.

Owen R. Stowell, 72, was pronounced dead at the scene on Union Chapel Road in the Sunnybrook community at approximately 7 p.m. by Deputy Coroners Anthony Vaughn and Larry West.

Stowell had apparently left his home Thursday evening to drive approximately half a mile to the end of the road to the mailbox. While returning home, Stowell's vehicle, a red Jeep Wrangler, left the road and struck a tree.

The accident occurred at approximately 5:49 p.m., according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Department. Also responding to the scene were Wayne County EMS and the Monticello Fire Department.

The investigation into the cause of the accident is continuing.

Stowell is survived by his wife, Kathryn, and two daughters. Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 28 with burial in the Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Complete obituary information is included in this week's Outlook.
