Hart arrested after alleged assault

Monticello — A local man was arrested on Wednesday, October 15, after an alleged

assault occurred at the Chevron station on Main Street. Police responded to

an alarm at the station at approximately 1:46 p.m. on Wednesday and arrested

Keith Hart.

Hart was charged with first degree assault in connection with the

incident, after allegedly attacking the station owner with a knife. The

victim sustained only minor injuries in the incident, according to

Monticello Police Chief Ralph Miniard.

In addition, Hart was charged with criminal mischief second degree and

stalking second degree in connection with an earlier incident, according to

Miniard.

Hart was lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center, until the

following day, when he was transported to the state reformatory in La

Grange, Ky. On the way to the state reformatory, Hart caused problems for

the Wayne County deputy jailer who was transporting him.

According to Jailer Ray Upchurch, Hart managed to free himself from his

seatbelt and one of his foot restraints. He said that Hart remained in

cuffs, shackles and a belly chain throughout the time, but that he began to

rock the vehicle, causing a disruption.

The deputy jailer pulled to the side of Interstate 75 and then requested

help from Lexington police, since Hart had to be taken out the vehicle to

secure the restraints.

More than a dozen police officers responded to the scene and helped with

the situation. Hart was then transported to La Grange without further

incident.
