1-18-12 —     The Wayne County Wrestling Team traveled to Hazard on Saturday,  

January 14, to compete in the Region 8 Duals.

    The tournament was held at Perry County Central and featured 11 of  

13 teams in Region 8. Teams attending were Johnson Central, Letcher  

County Central, Pike County Central, Ashland Blazer, Wayne County,  

Sheldon Clark, Belfry, Jenkins, Perry County Central, Whitley County  

and Lawrence County.

    The tournament was divided into three pools with two pools of four  

and one pool of three teams. The winners of each pool advanced to the  

finals with the top two teams advancing to the State Dual Tournament  

on January 28 in Lexington.

    Wayne County defeated Sheldon Clark, Belfry and Jenkins to advance.  

Wayne County defeated Perry County Central and Johnson Central to win  

the Region 8 Dual Championship.

    This was the first regional dual championship since 2008. The Mat  

Cardinals record is now 26 wins and 5 losses.

    Coach Upchurch stated, "This team was not picked in the rankings to  

finish very high, but their work ethic and dedication to the sport  

have made them a good team. They have the ability to achieve some big  

goals and this is one—winning the regional duals."

    The Mat Cardinals will be back in action on Thursday, January 19,  

when they travel to Livingston Academy. Starting time is 6 p.m. in  

Livingston, Tenn.

    The team will travel to Knoxville on Saturday, January 21, to  

wrestle in the Knoxville Webb Duals. Starting time will be 10 a.m. at  

Webb High School.
