Cardinals lose at East Jessamine 110-81

1-18-12 —   The Wayne County Cardinals traveled to East Jessamine on Tuesday,

January 10. The Cards were coming off a win over Whitley County,

while the Jaguars were coming off a big win over rival West Jessamine.

This game marked the seventh meeting between the two schools with  Wayne County leading the series 5-2. The two teams last met on

February 12, 2011, with Wayne County winning by a score of 78-67.

In last Tuesday's contest, the Cards kept it even in the first

quarter, but East Jessamine scored 40 points in the second stanza.

Wayne County ended up with a 110-81 loss.

"After the first quarter, it was a total breakdown on both ends of

the court," said Wayne County Coach Rodney Woods. "East is extremely

quick, and they made us pay for being out of position play after play."

The score was tied at 24 at the end of the first quarter, but the

Jags turned up their offense in the second quarter to claim a 64-35

lead at the half.

It was 88-52 at the end of the third quarter as East Jessamine

cruised on for the win.

"Early foul troubles kept a couple of our quickest players on the

bench way too long, so we had some tough match-ups in certain

positions," said Woods. "East was by far the superior team on this

night, so it's back to the drawing board."

Wayne County was led in scoring by Andy Dodd with 21 points. He also

led the Cards in rebounds with 9 and in steals with 2.

Also in double figures for Wayne County was Corey Stearns with 11

points and Peyton Woods with 10 points.

Trey Blevins, who scored 4 points, led the Cards in assists with 2.

Wayne County hit 27 of 62 from the field for 43 percent. They were 5

of 20 on 3-pointers for 25 percent and hit 22 of 32 from the free

throw line for 68 percent.

East Jessamine was led in scoring by C.J. Boyd with 18 points.

Cameron Thomas scored 15 points in the win.

The Jaguars hit 44 of 88 from the field for 50 percent. They hit 2

of 9 from beyond the arc for 22 percent and were 19 of 29 from the

free throw line for 65 percent.

East Jessamine won the battle on the boards 33-28. The Cards had 32

turnovers compared to 17 for the Jaguars.

Next up for Wayne County was a Friday night game at home against

Knox Central.
