5-8-13 — Baseball is in the early season and local youth will have a chance to refine their skills, with the 2nd Annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes/Spring Training Camp presented by Josh Anderson. The camp, at Monticello-Wayne County's Memorial Park, is set for May 21 from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., for ages 7-12.
The camp will feature instruction from several former high school and current coaches, headed up by former major leaguer and Pulaski County native Josh Anderson.
"I'm looking forward to a great day of instruction and fun. This is our second camp in Wayne County and I really enjoy sharing and encouraging young people. Last year was an awesome experience and we're hoping for some nice weather, plus another big turn-out," said Anderson.
Anderson was a fourth round draft pick of the Houston Astros and played for the Astros, Braves, Tigers, Royals, Reds and Brewers organizations, while leading all of minor league baseball with 79 stolen bases in 2004.
"Josh Anderson does a tremendous job in camp settings and the kids will certainly enjoy being around him all day. He provides first class instruction on and off the field, so for the price I strongly encourage anyone that plays baseball to make plans to attend. Last year's camp was a total of six hours over two days and this year we're trying an all-day event with meal and tee shirt included, so it should be a great day," said camp director Shannon Hutchinson.
Hitting, fielding, throwing, base running, along with making proper life choices all will be covered during the camp.
The cost is $25 per child and includes a tee shirt and snacks, plus the camp is offering a sibling discount of $20. Applications are available and can be turned in at Community Development office inside the Courthouse, or the ASPIRE Center.
For more information call Shannon at (606) 348-4241, or Bradley at
(606) 340-9362. Space is limited and scholarships are available.
