Cards derail the Engineers 47-36 in first road test

8-31-11 —     Coming off of their first victory of the season the Cardinals had a

week to prepare for the Engineers of Estill County.

All week the coaches and team prepared for the style of play. During

the game it showed that the Cardinals had worked hard during the week

as they came out with the 47-36 win.

"I feel our kids stayed focused and executed our game plan, I felt

that our kids played with their hearts for four quarters. We bent a

couple of times but never broke and that's a good sign for such a

young team" said Thompson.

The Cardinals started the game off with two touchdown runs from

sophomore quarterback Tyler Guffey rushed for two touchdowns.

Guffey was not finished leading the Cards—he threw for a school

record 304 yards with three touchdowns.

Dagan Shelton led the Cardinal receivers with 143 yards and two

touchdowns. Freshman Logan Gardner caught the third touchdown pass

from Guffey.

The Cards was led in rushing by Shawn Dishman, who racked up a total

of 129 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns. The Cardinals

finished the game with 223 yards of rushing giving them 527 total

offensive yards for the game against the Engineers.

"I am proud of our team for going on the road for the first time

this season and staying focused" said Thompson.

During the game the defense played well and stuck to their game plan.

Thompson said, "Our defense gave up some big plays, which I was

worried about due to Estill County offense being so confusing, but

our kids stuck with the game plan and really over all played well and

made some big plays when we needed them."

The Cardinal defense only allowed the Engineers to gain six first

downs throughout the entire game.

The defense was led by Dagan Shelton, John Guffey, Cody Rhule and  James Barnes.

"These four players were outstanding on defense, they played hard

nosed football the whole night" said Thompson.

Another highlight for the Cards was the performance by the special

teams. The kickoff team was able to recover two onside kicks during

the game.

Thompson stated, "Our special teams improved a lot from last week

and down the stretch; I feel they really had a big part in our win."

Next week the Cardinals will travel to London, Kentucky to take on

the Jaguars of North Laurel.

This week the Cards will continue to work hard so they can take it

to the next level this week against the Jags. Like Coach Thompson's

motto "always compete!"

Details on the match up will be in next week's edition of The Outlook.
