Memorial Park will grow soon, as it will include an additional 19 acres that have been purchased by the Parks and Recreation Committee. The committee met on Tuesday, January 29 and approved the purchase of the property which is adjacent to the park.

According to a purchase agreement between Parks and Recreation and the property owner, the land will be purchased at a cost of $15,000. Parks and Recreation will be responsible for any costs associated with the property survey, which is being conducted now.
They will also pay for preparation of the deed.
County Judge-Executive Mike Anderson recommended that the committee move ahead with the purchase, since the organization has money available to pay for the property.
No specific plans have been made regarding use of the additional land for the park.
Anderson did present the committee with a list of grants that could be available for projects at the park. He indicated that he would discuss these options with the Lake Cumberland Area Development District during an upcoming meeting.
Since this was the first meeting of the group in the new year, they set a regular meeting time for the third Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. Anderson was elected to serve as chairperson and secretary. Mayor Tracie Sexton will serve as vice-chairperson.
The committee discussed a couple of other issues, including the process used to select photographers for youth leagues. Parks and Recreation Director Lonnie Chaplin said that last year pictures were divided between two local photographers. He suggested that the same process be used this year, but noted that teams and coaches do not have to utilize these photographers exclusively.
If a team would like to have pictures made by another photographer, they can make that decision.
Chaplin did recommend that the committee seek bids for apparel, including t-shirts and caps, for the youth leagues. He said that this process has worked well in the past and allows park officials to select between the best bids and to also consider the service that is available from the company.
The committee discussed the purchase of a dumpster to be used for trash collection at the park. Chaplin said there has been an ongoing problem with animals shredding trash bags at the park and he had talked with MUC Director Scott Upchurch about the possibility of getting a dumpster.
The committee tabled a decision on the matter until they get information about the possibility of purchasing a used dumpster to be placed at the park.
