A Wayne County man died Wednesday, August 23 after suffering a
gunshot wound to the chest, and a 16-year-old boy has been charged
with murder.
According to Monticello Police Chief Ralph Miniard, Matthew Odair
Young, 20, of Monticello, died at the Wayne County Hospital where he
was taken after he suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest at
his residence on Mercer Drive. The incident was reported at
approximately 9:02 p.m., and police and EMS responded to the scene.
The suspect left the residence following the incident, according to
Miniard. He said the 16-year-old was apprehended within an hour of
the incident near the scene. He was charged with murder and lodged in
the juvenile facility at Adair County.
Miniard said the weapon involved in the incident was a nine
milimeter. At this point, he said that police are unable to discuss a
possible motive for the shooting.
An autopsy was conducted in Frankfort on August 24.
Miniard stated that the investigation is continuing. He did not rule
out the possibility that the juvenile who has been detained may face
additional charges.
The juvenile was in court on Friday, August 25. Any action taken in
juvenile court is part of a sealed record and is not available to the

public.
