Three meth labs discovered

Wayne County Outlook

Monticello — Three more local meth labs have been discovered in the last week, which

have resulted in nine arrests. Multiple agencies have been involved in all

three investigations.

The most recent meth lab bust was on Sunday, April 5 in the Cowan-Hull

Subdivision. According to the Wayne County Sheriff's Department, deputies

with the department, along with the Lake Cumberland Area Drug Task Force,

served a criminal summons on Douglas Upchurch at 329 Cowan-Hull Subdivision.

While serving the criminal summons, officers said they smelled a strong

chemical odor coming from the residence. Officers apparently observed

several subjects attempting to conceal items which appeared to be items used

in the manufacturing of methamphetamine.

Officers conducted a search of the residence and located an active

methamphetamine lab and other items used in the manufacturing process.

Officers located an undetermined amount of suspected meth, cash and an

undetermined amount of prescription pills.

Upchurch was arrested and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine,

tampering with physical evidence, and on a district court warrant.

Kenneth Eudy, of Glasgow, was arrested and charged with manufacturing

methamphetamine and tampering with physical evidence. Both were lodged in

the Wayne County Detention Center.

The investigation is continuing and more charges and arrests are

expected. The Monticello Police Department and the Monticello Fire

Department assisted with the investigation.

On Wednesday, April 1, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and the Lake

Cumberland Area Drug Task Force served an arrest warrant on Robert Allen

Sweet and a civil summons on Felicia Hicks, at 29 Alice Drive in Monticello.

During the arrest, officers observed several illegal items inside the

residence.

Officers obtained a search warrant for the residence and located an

undetermined amount of suspected methamphetamine and morphine. During the

investigation on Alice Drive, officers received information of a possible

methamphetamine lab on West KY 90 at Sweet's residence.

A search of that residence revealed an active methamphetamine lab in

the living room and other items used in the manufacturing process.

Jack Young, of Alice Drive, was arrested and charged with trafficking in

a controlled substance first degree (methamphetamine), possession of

controlled substance first degree (morphine), and hindering apprehension.

Tracy Hurt was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled

substance first degree (morphine), tampering with physical evidence and

resisting arrest.

Sweet was charged with contempt of court and for manufacturing

methamphetamine.

The Monticello Police Department and the Monticello Fire Department

assisted at the scene. The investigation is continuing and more arrests are

suspected.

The Monticello Police Department executed a search warrant on Monday,

March 30 at the residence of Jeffrey Scott Dean, on Furnace Mountain Road,

which is approximately 2.5 miles west of the city. During the search, a

working methamphetamine lab was discovered inside the residence.

Four people were arrested at the residence and charged with

manufacturing methamphetamine and controlled substance endangerment to a

child fourth degree. Those arrested were: Dean, 32; Gayle Smith, 39; Ronnie

Smith, 18; and Eric Anderson, 33.

Also assisting with execution of the search warrant were: Kentucky State

Police, the Wayne County Sheriff's Department, Operation UNITE, the

Monticello Fire Department, Laurel County Public Safety and Wayne County

Social Services.
