Fourth of July holiday weekend was relatively safe on Wayne County roadways

7-13-11 — The three-day Fourth of July holiday weekend was a relatively safe one on Wayne County roadways, but it was a different story on the water, as several incidents resulted in six people being airlifted to larger hospitals.

Three of the four incidents occurred on Sunday, July 3, according to information released by Ken-tucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources Captain Tim Catron.

The first accident was reported at about 7:29 p.m. on Saturday, July

2 in the Cumberland Point area of Wayne County, which is actually on the other side of Lake Cumberland. Catron said that a boy was riding in a ski tube that hit a wake. The boy sustained injuries when he was thrown from the tube.

Since the accident occurred near Pulaski County, emergency medical crews from that area responded. Catron said the boy was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Hospital.

On Sunday, July 3 at 12:45 p.m., another ski tube accident near F & T Lake Lots resulted in one person being injured. The ski tube had three occupants when it hit a large wake and one person was ejected.

The person was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.

At about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, officers responded to a report of a possible drowning in the Camp Attrahunt area. A male had apparently gone under the water while swimming but had been rescued by companions who were nearby.

Wayne County EMS responded to the scene and the male was later airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

A serious boating accident at about 10:38 p.m. on Sunday, July 3 sent three people to the hospital. According to Catron, a 20-foot runabout was adrift in the Harmon Creek area, while its occupants were in the water.

Another boat struck the runabout in the side and the propeller hit three of the swimmers. They were all flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment. A fourth person was uninjured.

Several officers from Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife were involved in the investigations of these incidents including: Catron, Jason Estes, Sharkley Stonewall, Travis Neal and Wayne Glover.
