1-5-11 — Wayne Countians got a rare gift on December 25—a white Christmas. In fact, it had been 11 years since there had been measurable snow on the ground on Christmas Day, according to J.D. Rogers, local observer for the National Weather Service.
Wayne County's last white Christmas was in 1999, when there was two inches on the ground that morning. Rogers reported a total of three inches on the ground this Christmas.
The meteorological definition of a white Christmas is at least an inch of snow on the ground at 7 a.m. on Christmas morning.
Snow began to fall on Christmas Eve and continued throughout Christmas Day.
Snow showers continued on Sunday, December 26 and by Monday morning, Rogers reported a total of four inches on the ground locally.
The snow may have caused some travel woes for people as they made their way to Christmas celebrations, but for the most part main roads were passable throughout the weekend.
Road crews were out salting and scraping throughout the weekend.
No major accidents or incidents were reported in connection with the inclement weather.
