9-18-13 — A recent tragic accident on Bypass 90 has prompted local officials
to contact the state regarding safety in that area.
During a meeting of fiscal court on Thursday, September 12, Wayne County Judge-Executive Greg Rankin said he had been in contact with the Governor's office and with state transportation officials
regarding that area of the Bypass.
A three-car crash near the intersection of Bypass 90 at Jim Hill Service Road resulted in two deaths. That has caused a host of local officials to voice their concern about speeding and other traffic
problems in that area.
Rankin noted during last week's meeting that this is a state roadway, so the county can take no action. He indicated that dialogue would continue with state officials to see what can be done.
Also during the meeting, the court approved the second reading of an ordinance amending the 2014 budget to include unbudgeted receipts of $809,952. The largest portion of that money was from CDBG grant funding.
The court also:
. Approved the appointment of Wayne County to the 911 board.
. Heard a monthly report from Jailer Ray Upchurch who noted that
total population at the Detention Center totaled 161, which included
30 county inmates, 99 state inmates and 32 from other counties. For
the month of August the county has billed a total of $103,617.44 for
housing inmates.
. Heard a monthly report from Solid Waste Coordinator Tim Bell who stated that white goods had been collected at 77 households last month, bringing the total for the year to 596. Recycling sales for August totaled $5,603.64. Bell noted that the Household Hazardous Waste Event will be held Saturday, October 12 at the Wayne County Recycling Center. Other details about the event will be released later.
. Heard a monthly report from Wayne County EMS Director Bubby Corder who stated that the ambulance service answered a total of 340 calls in August, bringing the total for the year to 2,576.
