4-27-11 — The Wayne County School Board met on Monday, April 18 and reviewed
design development drawings for the addition to the middle school.
The board approved the drawings, which is basically the next step in
the process.
Mike Sparkman, with Lucas Schwering Architectural Firm, presented
the plans, which are basically more detailed than preliminary
drawings that board members reviewed about a month ago. In March, the
board approved the location for the addition and this month they got
a better look at the classrooms and other details that will be
included in construction.
The two-story addition will include eight new classrooms and it will
be located near the gymnasium and cafeteria at the middle school. It
will be designed as a wing to house sixth grade students in the
district.
Also during the meeting, the board approved the site-based decision
making allocations for next year, which total $6,471,498. The
allocations are based on the same formula that was used the previous
year.
The board met at Bell Elementary and enjoyed a special welcome by
members of the Bell Tones who started the program by singing "My Old
Kentucky Home." Board members were then invited to visit a number of
stations throughout the room where fourth grade students demonstrated
typical science activities.
Board members also learned more about Bell Elementary through a
video presentation that highlighted events from the school's recent
"Crazy Learning Day."
Also during the meeting, winners of the "School Breakfast
Detectives" Nutrition Art Contest were recognized. First place school
winners included: Gracie Gifford, Wayne County Early Childhood
Center; Riley Hicks, Walker Elementary; Kenzie D. Crabtree, Bell
Elementary; Brandi Thompson, Turner Intermediate; and Dillon West,
Wayne County High School.
Dillon West and Brandi Thompson were selected as district winners
and are eligible for state competition.
The district's IT Department provided board members with an update
on wireless upgrades to the district, as well as new video
distribution systems. The video distribution system will enhance
media specialists' ability to record programs, with the staff and
students being provided more direct access to television channels and
videos through the district website.
Fourth grader Natalie Hutchinson provided a brief presentation about
the new technology.
In other action, the board:
• Approved the agreement with K-9 Resources for the substance
awareness and deterrent services agreement for the 2011-2012 school
year.
• Approved the 2011 Summer Food Service Program.
• Approved an out-of-state trip for Wayne County Area Technology
students who qualified for the National HOSA Conference in California
in June.
• Declared several vehicles and buses surplus property so that can
be advertised and sold by sealed bid.
• Approved the use of the Wayne County High School auditorium for
the Junior Miss Scholarship Program on May 20 and May 21.
