Wayne County Schools ask state for 5 days Melodie phelps, News Editor
Wayne County Outlook
Monticello — The Wayne County Board of Education has asked for a waiver of up to five
school days that were missed because of bad weather.
If no days are granted, then students in the school system will attend
classes through May 29, according to an amended calender which was approved
by the board during a meeting held on Monday, March 16.
The amended calendar included an additional makeup day for the last snow
day that was missed on March 13. The final day for teachers on this calendar
is June 1.
Also during the meeting, the board approved the calender for the
2009-2010 school year, which is basically the same as the current school
year.
The first day for classes next year is set for August 5. The calendar
includes the traditional fall break, Christmas break and spring break. The
final day for classes in next year's calendar is May 19.
The board agreed to move ahead with the purchase of two acres of
property adjacent to campus.
Superintendent John Dalton said that he had talked with Kentucky
Department of Education officials regarding the purchase of property and
they encourage the district to go ahead with the acquisition because of the
limited space on campus.
Dalton said the property is next to the baseball field and is available
at the purchase price of $18,000 per acre. Money from the district's
construction account can be used to acquire the property, according to
Dalton.
The board meeting was held at the Wayne County High School, as the
series of meetings continues at schools on the county campus. Wayne County
High School Principal Peggy Shearer presented board members with a slide
show about the school and highlighted many of the efforts that teachers and
staff make to help students transition to life after high school.
Board members also recognized students who were 2008 Wayne County
District School Nutrition Art winners, including fourth grader Alexandra
Preat, first grader Emmersen Van Nice and fourth grader Josie Jackson. Their
winning posters are on the district website and were sent to the Kentucky
School Nutrition Association state office for judging.
In other action, the board:
€ Approved an amendment to the 2009-2010 working budget to reflect
changes in the KDE SEEK forecast.
€ Approved a request by South Central Kentucky Gear-Up for a trip to
Washington, D.C. May 17-20 for Wayne County students who qualify.
€ Accepted a KETS offer of assistance in the amount of $26,036 to be
escrowed for up to three years.
