Filing deadline fast approaching for general election

8-11-10 —     The filing deadline for non-partisan races that will appear on the

November general election ballot is less than a week away, and at press time

there were still only four candidates who had filed for the six city council

seats available. And in several school board races, no candidates have filed

for those positions as of Monday morning.

Two candidates have filed for Monticello Mayor, including incumbent

Kenneth Catron and current City Councilman Jeffrey Edwards. four candidates

have filed for City Council, including incumbent Joe Gibson, Dallas Hoskins,

Allen Hopper, and Jonathan Morris.

Two seats are available on the Wayne County Board of Education.

Incumbent Patty Roberts has filed for re-election to her seat, which is in

Division Four. Paul Dunnington has filed for re-election to his seat, which

is in Division Three.

Three seats are also available on the Monticello Board of Education and

so far, no candidates have filed in those races.

So far three candidates have filed for the three available Soil

Conservation positions. Karen Bethel and Kay Upchurch have filed as

candidates and join Hallis Koger on the ballot in those races.

Things have been quiet so that means there could be a flurry of activity

in the Wayne County Clerk's Office in the next few days, as candidates hurry

to beat the deadline. Any candidates in these non-partisan races must have

their paperwork filed in the County Clerk's Office by 4 p.m. on Tuesday,
