6-30-10 — The Wayne County Board of Education met on Thursday, June 17 and approved the salary schedule for 2010-2011, which reflects a two-day reduction in instructional time for the district. That means the next school
year will be 185 days instead of 187.
Superintendent John Dalton noted that the state legislature did not fund a 187 day school year so many districts are opting to reduce the number of
instructional days by two. That was his recommendation to the Wayne County
School Board last week.
The board had previously approved two versions of the calendar‹one for
187 days and one for 185 days‹as it waited for the state legislature to meet
in special session. There is little difference in the calendars. Both have
the same start date, which is August 11, and both include the traditional fall and spring breaks. The only difference was in the length of Christmas
break. The shorter calendar gives two extra days of Christmas break, making it a full two-week recess from classes.
In other action on Thursday evening, the board honored retiring
certified and classified staff members who include: Frances Allen, Susan
Hughes, Linda Kidd, Patricia Richardson, Peggy Shearer, Sandra Weber, Ron
Barber, Mack Coffey, Linda Dishman, Rita New and Grace Smedley.
Retirees were presented with a plaque along with thanks for their years
of service to the school district.
³We appreciate what you have done over the years for the children of Wayne County,² stated Wayne County Superintendent John Dalton.

The meeting also included a scholarship presented to recent WCHS grad Kinly Bertram, who is the recipient of the U.S. Marine Corps¹ Semper Fidelis
Award for the state of Kentucky. Bertram, a member of the Class of 2010, accepted the award from Marine Sgt. Pickett, who noted that there are only
three music awards presented to high school students in Kentucky each year
and this is the most prestigious.
In other action, the board:
€ Approved the purchase of two additional acres of property adjacent to
the campus. The property will cost $18,000 per acre.
€ Approved the district assurance for the Kentucky Department of
Education.
€ Opted to keep meal prices the same for the 2010-2011 school year.
€ Declared several items previously used in the greenhouses as surplus
property.
€ Approved an out of state trip for the Wayne County Lady Cardinals to
Myrtle Beach for basketball camp.
