6-23-10 — It's hard to find anyone today whose lives have not been touched by
cancer. The battle with this deadly disease is all around us.
The local community will be able to join the fight on Friday, June
18 as part of Wayne County's Relay for Life. It is set to begin at
Monticello-Wayne County Memorial Park at 6 p.m. and will continue
until 7 a.m. Saturday, June 19.
Teams of walkers will take turns walking or running around the track
in this non-competitive event. There will be a variety of events
throughout the evening, including a special luminaria ceremony to
remember those who have been affected by cancer.
Candles will be lit in memory or honor of cancer patients and placed
around the perimeter of the track. Luminarias can be purchased for a
minimum contribution of $5. The luminaria ceremony will be held at
approximately 9:45 p.m. Friday night.
Friday's events will begin with the Bell Tones performing at 6 p.m.
At 7 p.m. the Relay for Life official kickoff is set to begin,
featuring the survivor's lap.
