9-8-10 — There's something new in the Wayne County Clerk's Office. Thanks to a state grant through Library and Archives, deeds are now available
online.
This makes Wayne County one of only a few counties in the state to offer the service, according to Deputy Clerk Brenda Corder who has
spearheaded the effort to get records scanned and ready for the new
system. It's been an effort that has been ongoing for the past two
and a half years, and Corder noted the work began before the office
was even notified that it had received grant funding for the new
equipment.
"We went ahead and started this because we were trying to get the
grant," said Corder, as she talked recently about the online service
which launched on August 2.
Currently, deeds and other records that were filed from February 16,
2009 through the present are available online. Deeds from 1951
through February 15, 2009 and mortgages from 1975 through February
15, 2009 are on the computer and can be accessed through a public use
computer in the clerk's office. Corder noted that by late this year
all these records will be incorporated into the new system and will
be available online.
The site is www.waynecountyky.com. Corder noted that users of the
site must register, but there is no charge to register. A download of
alternatiff is also required to view images to print online.
Searches can be done by name, by date, or other criteria. Each page
of a deed or document can be viewed online.
"You can print the entire document or just a page," noted Corder.
It is something that has got a lot of people excited, since it saves
a lot of time for someone looking for a document.
"You don't have to search through an index book all day now," said
Corder. "Now, it's just a click and you can search everything in the
computer.
"I think it is great for the people, especially for those who do
title searches," said Wayne County Clerk Josephine Gregory. "They
won't have to come back to the office to check for updates. They can
look online and see if anything has been recorded."
The office still has all the hard copies of everything, and deed
books date back to the 1800's according to Corder. There are plans to
eventually get all records scanned and available online.
