The Monticello-Wayne County Park Board has taken the next step toward a construction project that will add restrooms to the park. During a meeting held on Tuesday, November 13, the board authorized chairman Jane Dalton to enter into an agreement with Wayne County Fiscal Court to execute and furnish all documentation for the project and to act as the authorized correspondent.

Wayne County Judge-Executive Greg Rankin attended the meeting to update board members on the project, which was funded through grant money from the Governor's Office for Local Community Development (GOLD). The Park Board received a $75,000 grant to build new restrooms adjacent to the playground area at the park. The restrooms will offer easier restroom access for children. Park visitors using the park's multi-purpose show ring, baseball and softball fields and numerous picnic shelters will also benefit from the facility.

Also during the meeting, the board recognized the work done by member Gene Jones during his tenure. He has served a total of five years and board members commended him for a job well done.

Jones served on the board as a member of Monticello City Council, but he recently resigned as councilman after becoming interim manager for the Monticello Utility Commission. Mayor Kenneth Catron will make an appointment to replace Jones on the Park Board.

The board heard a report from Park Director David Upchurch, who noted that during the winter months park gates will close at 6 p.m. unless there is a scheduled event. Upchurch also told the board that renovations are continuing on Kiwanis Field II.

Also during the meeting, the board authorized payroll accountant Barbara Lester at Monticello Banking Company to sign all checks for county, state, and federal payroll taxes so that they can be filed in a timely manner.

The next regularly scheduled Park Board meeting is December 6 at 5 p.m.

at Monticello City Hall.
